Kerala Backwaters and Tamil Temple Trail
This route runs from the tea-covered hills of Munnar down through the spice country of Thekkady to a full day and night on a private houseboat in the Alleppey backwaters, then finishes with the evening temple rituals of Madurai. Slow travel by design, with only one or two destinations per leg.
Day by day
Arrive Kochi
Airport pickup, check-in, and a Fort Kochi walking tour past the Chinese fishing nets. Evening Kathakali dance performance.
Kochi to Munnar
Drive up through spice and rubber plantations into the tea hills of Munnar.
Munnar
Morning tea garden walk on a working plantation, then Eravikulam National Park and Mattupetty Dam in the afternoon.
Munnar to Thekkady
Drive to Thekkady, with a spice plantation tour on arrival.
Thekkady to Alleppey
Morning boat ride on Periyar Lake, then drive to Alleppey and board your private houseboat for the night.
Alleppey Backwaters
A full day cruising the backwaters at houseboat pace, past paddy fields and canal-side villages, with meals cooked on board.
Alleppey to Madurai
Disembark and drive to Madurai. Evening aarti ceremony at the Meenakshi Amman Temple.
Madurai, departure
Morning temple visit, then transfer to the airport or station for your onward journey.
