A day in Mumbai, then a short flight inland to two of India’s most extraordinary sites: the monolithic Kailasa Temple at Ellora and the 2,000-year-old cave paintings at Ajanta, both carved directly into a cliff face. Compact, but not rushed.
Airport pickup and a heritage walk through South Mumbai: the Gateway of India, Colaba Causeway, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, ending with the evening promenade along Marine Drive.
Morning flight to Aurangabad. Afternoon at the Ellora Caves, including the Kailasa Temple, a single Hindu temple carved downward out of one solid rock face.
Morning at the Ajanta Caves to see the Buddhist rock-cut paintings and sculptures, then an afternoon flight back to Mumbai for your onward departure.
